Telling the story of a city shaped by water

Local news and environmental reporting on Honolulu’s Ala Wai communities

High Tide Report covers the Ala Wai Watershed and the communities that flow within it: from the upper valleys to the coastal plain. The watershed includes the neighborhoods of Waikīkī, Mānoa, Pālolo, Makiki, McCully/Mōʻiliʻili and Ala Moana. Many times, issues intersect other neighborhoods as well. Together, they form one of Honolulu’s most densely populated and environmentally complex regions.

Based in Honolulu, my reporting focuses on local and regional coverage of the environment and climate. The goal isn’t to cover everything or compete with other journalists or news outlets: it’s to add more reporting to the mix. Climate and environmental stories are unfolding everywhere, and there’s always room for more voices, context, and coverage.

The primary focus is on environmental and climate issues, such as flooding, water quality, infrastructure, land use, and community resilience, and how these forces shape daily life in the watershed.

While environmental reporting anchors this project, the newsletter also covers general community news, including neighborhood board meetings, local events, and breaking developments. Each edition aims to connect readers to what’s happening in their communities while tracing the larger story of how Honolulu adapts to a changing climate.

From Honolulu, this is the High Tide Report. I’m Anthony Albidrez. I am an award-winning reporter and photojournalist, hell-bent on practicing localized reporting.

High Tide Report is simply a journalism project.

What You’ll Find

Headliners: Regular news briefs on climate and environment happenings from across the state: short, clear, and to the point.

Original reporting: Longer stories that go deeper into the issues, people, and places shaping Hawai‘i’s future.

I’m learning as I go and welcome feedback, collaboration, and contributions, especially from local and student journalists, photographers, and creators.
